Make a glasses-and-hat character

Gather: one stable pumpkin, a lightweight hat, paper for glasses and a moustache, pencil, adult scissors, surface-compatible removable fixings.

  1. Wipe the pumpkin and allow the surface to dry. Rest it on a stable surface; do not claim a guaranteed display lifespan.
  2. Sketch the glasses and moustache on paper. Hold them against the pumpkin to check their size before cutting.
  3. An adult cuts the paper details. Test the chosen fixing on a small compatible area according to its label, then attach the light paper pieces.
  4. Rest the hat on top rather than fastening a heavy object with pins or wire. If it falls, choose a lighter prop instead.
  5. Add a separate name or story card. Check that the pumpkin and props stay stable before placing the display where children can reach it.

For children, choose materials intended for the child’s age and follow product labels. Adults handle cutting and review small pieces before use.

Material guidance: CPSC Art and Craft Safety Guide.

Inspect the pumpkin during display and remove it if it deteriorates. This guide does not promise a specific making time or call an uncarved pumpkin inherently safe for unsupervised children.
